Some items need more protection than normal packing can provide. For especially fragile, valuable, or oversized items, custom crating services are available as an optional service for aliyah shipments to Israel.
A custom crate is a wooden box built specifically around the item being shipped. The goal is to provide extra protection during trucking, ocean shipping, customs handling, and final delivery.
Custom crating is often recommended for:
- pianos
- artwork and paintings
- antiques
- marble or glass table tops
- fragile electronics and large TVs
- valuable collectibles
Over the years, we have arranged custom crates for many different types of items, including pianos of all sizes, marble table tops, large framed artwork, and even an original Andy Warhol piece.
Crating is an additional service at an additional cost. Pricing depends on the size of the item, the complexity of the crate, and the pickup location. As a general idea:
- a simple painting crate may start around $200
- a piano crate may cost up to $850 or more
Because every item is different, crating prices are usually quoted individually.
Of course, custom crating does not guarantee that an item can never be damaged. However, it can provide a much higher level of protection for items that are especially delicate, difficult to replace, or very valuable.
If you are unsure whether something should be crated, it is usually a good idea to ask and send photos of the item ahead of time.
