Whether you’re doing some pre-aliyah self-packing or preparing a few boxes before the movers arrive, understanding the different types of moving boxes can make the process much easier.
The good news is that there is a box for almost everything.
If you are using a full-service shipment, extensive self-packing is usually unnecessary because the packing crew will professionally wrap and pack your household goods for export.
Common moving box types include:
• Small Boxes / Book Boxes — 1.5 cubic feet
Books, photo albums, sheet sets, tools, paperwork, and other small, heavy items.
• Medium Boxes — 3.5 cubic feet
Pots and pans, small appliances, office supplies, toys, craft supplies, and home décor.
• Large Boxes — 4.5 cubic feet
Lampshades, pillows, clothing, stuffed animals, speakers, board games, and other large, lightweight items.
• Dish Pack Boxes — 4.5 cubic feet
Double-walled cartons commonly used for dishes, kitchenware, glassware, and fragile items.
• Wardrobe Boxes — 12 cubic feet
Designed for clothes on hangers, as well as other light, bulky items.
• Picture Boxes — 2.5 cubic feet
Used for mirrors, artwork, diplomas, paintings, and other thin, flat items.
One important thing to understand is insurance coverage. Self-packed cartons are generally marked on the packing list as “PBO” (Packed By Owner), while professionally packed cartons are marked “CP” (Carrier Packed).
PBO cartons typically cannot qualify for All Risk insurance coverage because the carrier cannot verify the packing method or condition of the contents.
That said, most self-packed cartons containing everyday items such as clothing, books, toys, linens, and similar non-fragile goods are very rarely damaged during normal shipping.
IMPORTANT: Please do not tape your self-packed boxes shut before the movers arrive. The crew must be able to verify the contents for the packing list and customs documentation before sealing the cartons.
